  10. buttonFile is designed to work on IBM AT, PS/2, and 100% compatible 
  11. computers running Windows 3.x.  (You must be running Windows 3.1 to take
  12. full advantage of buttonFile's printing abilities including TrueType
  13. fonts).  buttonFile can be displayed on SVGA, VGA, EGA, and Hercules
  14. compatible monitors.  buttonFile is not compatible with a CGA monitor.
  15. In order to use buttonFile, your computer must have MS-DOS or PC-DOS 3.1 or
  16. later, Windows 3.x installed, at least 1MB RAM (more is highly
  17. recommended), and a minimum of 2MB available disk storage.  A mouse is also
  18. highly recommended.

  20. However, Windows requires a fairly sophisticated list of hardware:
  21. Windows generally requires better graphics hardware, more memory, and
  22. faster processors for equivalent performance when compared to a DOS
  23. application.  If you have an 80286 machine or better and at least 2MB of
  24. memory, the performance of Windows will be adequate.  Since buttonFile
  25. runs in the Windows environment, we recommend at least this level of
  26. hardware to take full advantage of buttonFile.

  28. To begin using buttonFile, you must install it to a hard drive.

  34. Make sure the contents of all the ZIP files (BFILE1A.ZIP, BFILE1B.ZIP,
  35. BFILE1C.ZIP, BFILE1D.ZIP and BFILE1E.ZIP) have been unzipped into the SAME
  36. temporary directory on your hard disk.

  38. Run the INSTALL.COM program. It can be run either from Windows Program
  39. Manager or from the DOS command line. When the INSTALL program asks you to 
  40. enter the subdirectory, we recommend you provide the name of the temporary
  41. directory where all of the ZIP files are located. (The default subdirectory
  42. is "\TEMP".) The INSTALL program decompresses and combines all of the files
  43. needed to run the buttonFile SETUP program.

  49. buttonFile includes a setup program (SETUP.EXE) designed to make actual
  50. program installation quick and easy.  The setup process normally takes
  51. about 5 minutes.

  53. To run SETUP:
  54.  
  55. 1. Start Windows.
  56. 2. Switch to the Windows Program Manager.
  57. 3. Choose Run from the Program Manager's File menu.
  58. 4. Type C:\TEMP\SETUP in the text box. 
  59.    (Replace "C:\TEMP\" with the same path you specified in the INSTALL
  60.    program. This is where the SETUP program is located.)
  61. 5. Choose OK.
  62.    The SETUP program will begin running.
  63. 6. The setup program will ask you to enter the path where you want 
  64.    buttonFile located. YOU MUST ENTER A PATH OTHER THAN THE "temporary"
  65.    SUBDIRECTORY WHERE THE SETUP PROGRAM IS LOCATED.

  67. After running buttonFile's SETUP program, a number of program items are
  68. located in the buttonFile program group.  Double-clicking on the buttonFile
  69. icon starts the buttonFile program. Double-clicking on the various NOTEPAD
  70. icons loads the associated read.me and shareware files into Windows Notepad.

  72. If you have trouble installing buttonFile, it may be due to insufficient
  73. memory.  To see how much memory is available, switch to the Program Manager
  74. and choose About Program Manager from the Help menu.  This displays an
  75. information box.  The amount of free memory is shown on the next to last
  76. line of the box.  If this amount is less than 950 KB you may have problems
  77. installing buttonFile.

  79. Here are some ideas for freeing up more memory:
  80.  
  81. If you have a 386sx computer or higher, run Windows in 386 Mode.  To do
  82. this, exit Windows and type WIN /3 at the DOS command line to restart
  83. Windows.

  85. If you are already running in 386 Mode and still don't have enough memory,
  86. refer to your Windows manual for information on how to increase Virtual
  87. Memory using Swap Files.
  88.  
  89. If you are running a 286 computer close all programs except Program Manager
  90. before trying to install buttonFile.  Also, choose the Control Panel icon
  91. in the Main group window, then choose the Desktop icon in the Control Panel
  92. and set Wallpaper and Screen Saver options to "(None)".
